At Doman & Co., we believe that every property has a story to tell. Some stories are just beginning, while others are waiting for the right person to turn the page and start a new chapter.
One of our favourite "success stories" in the Adelaide Hills is the breathtaking transformation of Robenia’s Cottage in Houghton. If you’ve driven past this stunning heritage retreat lately, it’s hard to imagine that not too long ago, it sat derelict, forgotten, and facing an uncertain future.
The story of Robenia’s Cottage begins in the late 1800s. It was built by John Gollop, a dedicated District Clerk, as a gift for his cherished wife, Robenia. Originally constructed as twin abodes, the structures were eventually amalgamated into a single dwelling during the 20th century.
For decades, the cottage stood as a testament to early settler life in the Houghton hamlet. However, as the years rolled by, the once-vibrant home fell into disrepair. By the time we at Doman & Co. were tasked with finding its next owner, the cottage was considered derelict. It was a "diamond in the rough" in the truest sense—full of historic soul but desperately needing a saviour to prevent it from being lost to time.
We remember the day we sold the property to its current owners. It takes a special kind of vision to look at a crumbling, overgrown site and see a luxury escape. We knew this wasn't just a land sale; it was a heritage rescue mission.
The buyers shared our passion for the local area and saw the same potential we did. They didn't just want to build something new; they wanted to honour John Gollop’s original legacy.
Since that sale, we have watched with pride as the owners meticulously restored the cottage. What was once a ruin is now a seamless blend of old-world elegance and modern farmhouse luxury.
The revival involved:
Preserving the Heritage: Saving the original stonework and structure from the brink of demolition.
Modern Luxury: Integrating high-end finishes, king-size master suites, and soaking tubs that offer a nod to the past with the comforts of today.
The Gardens: Restoring the picturesque grounds, including the iconic stone wishing well that has become a favourite backdrop for wedding photography.
Today, Robenia’s Cottage is one of the most sought-after wedding and luxury accommodation spots in the Adelaide Hills. It stands as a reminder of why we love what we do at Doman & Co.
We don't just move titles; we connect people with places. Seeing a piece of Houghton’s history brought back to life, knowing we played a part in finding the visionaries who made it happen, is exactly why we are proud to call the Hills our home.
